BETWEEN THE FRETS |:| 04/06/12

Alright, I’m ready to say it, even though I sort of like talking trash: I’m bored by all the media coverage of Dave Mustaine. UG.com ran an article today detailing “The 6 Most Controversial” of the Megadeth frontman’s comments, and frankly, I’ve had enough. So! With that being said, and my viking face paint still on my face from yesterday’s Paganfest: Chicago, let’s delve into some more interesting music news.

One-liner tidbits:

• “Metalocalypse Season 4 To Premiere This Month”

If you haven’t yet tired of Nathan Explosion & Friends’ antics, celebrate heavy metal culture right by tuning into the comedy powerhouse which will begin its new 12-episode season April 29 on Adult Swim.

• PHIL ANSELMO CREATES DOWNLOAD-ABLE RINGTONES

Pantera singer and Down frontman has released a series of ringtones that fans can download in an effort that Metal Sucks commentator Axl Rosenberg calls “a fairly brilliant idea.” To be sure, both his speaking and singing voice are some of the most recognizable in all of metal. While audio samples of the ten ringtones have yet to be released, a press release confirmed that “charges apply per ringtone.”

• CHRIS CORNELL: NEW SOUNDGARDEN TUNE NOT LIKE REST OF THE ALBUM

According to KISW-The Pulse of Radio (based out of Seattle), Chris Cornell said that fans should not think of the band’s newly released single “Live to Rise,” which was featured on “ soundtrack, as an indication of what the rest of the group’s new recording will sound like. Cornell explained, “Some of the songs on our new album are pretty far left of center, and sort of zero in on a more hardcore Soundgarden fan… Although [‘Live to Rise’] is not really what I think of as a necessarily family-friend song, but it’s as cose as we’ve ever come.” The new album, which will be the band’s first fresh material since 1996, is due out this fall.

• ‘FLYING COLORS’ FIRST WEEK SALES REVEALED

The self-titled debutfrom prog/pop/metal rock band formed by Mike Portnoy and guitarist Steve Morse is reported to have sold 6,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at No. 81 on the Billboard 200 chart. In addition to Portnoy and Morse, Flying Colors also features Dave LaRue (bass), Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals) and Casey McPherson (lead vocals, guitar). Portnoy told Audio Ink Radio, “I think if most people looked at this band on a piece of paper, they would think that it would be very progressive and instrumentally-based music, but I think once we started playing together, we got taken into all new directions.” Adrenaline Mob’s “Omerta” (one of Portnoy’s other side projects) sold around 6,600 copies in the US in its first week of release to land at position No. 70 on The Billboard 200.
