ANIMALS AS LEADERS PARTS WAYS WITH DRUMMER
Sick Drummer magazine was the first to spread the rumor that that drumming mastermind Navene Koperweis was quitting Animals; as of late last Friday night, the news was confirmed: Navene is indeed out of the band.
Reportedly, Navene departed on very amicable terms, as he released this statement about his departure:
“Tosin and Javier (Reyes, guitar) are the two most generous, caring and understanding individuals I’ve ever met and I look forward to a lifetime of friendship with the both of them. Over the past decade I have done nothing but music. Recording, writing, playing, practicing, touring and producing. It’s taken me beyond what I could have dreamt of as a kid when I started. My new goals extend beyond the drum kit and I’m the type of person who will constantly chase new dreams. You’ll be seeing a lot more of me soon.”
Animals As Leaders main man Tosin Abasi shared the positive vibes, with nothing but great things to say about Koperweis:
“I’ve shared some of my most memorable musical experiences to date with Navene and truly consider him a brother. I commend him for following his own path in life, even if that means i’ll no longer be sharing the stage with him. I feel blessed to have had the pleasure of working together and creating a lifelong friendship.”
The split seems like one of the least dramatic we’ve come across lately (Portnoy, anyone?) As for the new guy, Matt Garstka, the footage below seems quite indicative of this guy’s talent:

FLAMING LIPS USE KE$HA’S BLOOD IN RECORD
I know the Flaming Lips are weird, but this takes ‘creepy’ to a whole new level.
According to a UG.com article, the band is planning on including actual blood specimens from their collaborators as part of Record Store Day this year. Frontman Wayne Coyne says he’s been collecting vials from the likes of Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave, Coldplay and Lightening Bolt, though it’s not quite clear which artist(s) have actually taken part of this vampire-esque plan.
Coyne says the blood samples will help form a limited-edition picture disk, “like a glass specimen.” Only five or six of these disks will be made.
Coyne commented to MTV Hive, “You don’t really realize how many people are afraid of needles until you say, ‘Hey, I’m going to send someone by the show tonight to get some of your blood.”
OK, Wayne. More power to ya.

Only Major Labels Can DIY
Can you realistically be a full-time musician and a full-time businessman at the same time? Do you even want to do both, and can you honestly afford a team that goes beyond spirited volunteers? In a recent interview with attorney Steve Gordon, Alligator Records founder Bruce Iglauer strongly argues in favor of partnering with an ‘aggressive, committed, independent label’ primarily for the connections and marketing knowledge the relationship offers. The alternative, as unromantic as it sounds, could be great music that remains buried in obscurity - forever. The interview appears in the just-published The Future of the Music Business, Third Edition.
